A new resident reports on what he found
- Not the easiest place to find on a map but easy to find again once you have succeeded.
- We have a listed ice house, if you can find it.
- The telephone box was knocked down and never replaced.
- The bus stops were removed when I asked when the bus actually ran.
- The pub is the other side of the River Sour but they removed the bridge some 30 years
ago.
- The residents are friendly (all 156 or so, of them!)
As I have now been a resident for over a year, I thought I’d better warn anyone thinking
of finding our hamlet that you need to be prepared for the unexpected.
For example, the nearest village has a number of banks, supermarkets, charity shops,
a vet, police beat office, free car park, two opticians, several cafes, two pubs,
builders merchant, two doctors surgeries etc. I’d better stop there and return to
Wanlip!
So what does Wanlip have?
I knew you would ask that!
- We have have a church and church hall
- We have the Water Meadows
- We have industry in the form of sand and gravel, sewage works and composting centre.
Add in the Koi Carp seller, Manor Farm and a listed Ice House what else could you
want?
We have easy access to:
- Leicester Royal Infirmary
- Leicester General Hospital
- Glenfield Heart hospital
- M1 - London and the north
- A46 - Lincoln, Newark and Coventry
- A6 - London, St Albans, Loughborough etc.
- Main line to St Pancras
- Great central railway
- Space centre

Most of all a bit of peace and quiet (as does everywhere except the south-east).
Indeed, I was chatting to our newest resident (as at end of July 2017) who loves
it here, (now his home is for sale) the only problem is, they moved here from less
than 5 miles from where I came from which really isn’t good enough.
Now you know. I’ve been out and taken a few photos and they will get posted on the
following pages starting here over the next few weeks along with other updates.
If you have any suggestions, drop me a line.
The Wanlip village site can be found here where you will find old maps, village newsletters
along with parish meeting agendas and minutes. One of the things you will learn is
that Wanlip is considered ‘unsustainable’ but that’s down to the villagers to change
if they want to.
NEW - How about a bit about our nearest ‘village’ aka Birstall? All starts here!
